Have you been out on the town in Swindon? Going out to the theatre, to listen or dance to music, or to see a film has always been part of the life of the town.
Have you been out on the town in Swindon? Going out to the theatre, to listen or dance to music, or to see a film has always been part of the life of the town.
This exhibition explores Swindon’s theatres, dance halls, music venues and cinemas over the past 170 years. A team of dedicated volunteers has delved into the museum’s collections and researched the stories of going out in Swindon. There have been many different venues across the town feeding our desire to be entertained. Our team of volunteers have found jazz bands at the Arts Centre, blockbusters at the towns many, many cinemas, frisky club nights at the Brunel Rooms, glee singing at the Mechanic’ Institute, musicals at The Empire and the Wyvern, and much more!
Come and explore Swindon’s entertainment venues and the personalities who performed here over the last 170 years - and maybe spark memories of nights out that you remember!
The exhibition draws on Museum & Art Swindon’s collections, and is part of our Unlocking Collections volunteer project, funded by Arts Council England.
