Enter the magical world of the imagination and explore the fascinating stories at Museum & Art Swindon! Pupils hunt for, listen to, and participate in oral stories about artworks, artefacts and historical figures in the museum. There are opportunities for role play, creating sound effects, using props, dressing up and creating new stories. Supports the development of oracy and literacy skills and promotes imaginative thinking.
Pupils explore a chosen art medium (drawing, painting, print-making, ceramics or sculpture) by taking inspiration from gallery artworks and current exhibitions. They practise key skills, experiment with ideas, and create work to take back to school. A great opportunity for children to experience an art gallery and discover stunning modern & contemporary art in the flesh.
The game is on as pupils divide into Stone Age tribes and aim to solve Stone Age challenges! Can pupils find and catch their own food, keep warm, and design tools, clothes and buildings? Activities encourage children to shape their own historical enquiry and develop understanding of daily life 6000 years ago. There are opportunities for handling original and replica artefacts, dressing up, trying Stone Age tools, and cave-painting!
As trainee archaeologists, pupils investigate why the Romans founded their settlement at Durocornovium (Swindon) in the 1st century AD. Using a variety of sources and exploring the history galleries, pupils investigate the geography and geology of the area, learn about the area’s relationship to the rest of Roman Britain, and develop an understanding of daily life. Opportunities for handling original and replica artefacts, dressing-up, making Roman pottery, and training as Legionaries!
As trainee archaeologists, pupils discover the grave of an Anglo-Saxon warrior in Swindon. Their task is to use its clues to find out about life in Swindon 1300 years ago. Using a variety of sources and exploring the history galleries, pupils work in groups to find out how Anglo-Saxons lived, what they ate, and if they brushed their hair! Opportunities for viewing and handling artefacts from the original Swindon grave, designing coins, dressing-up, and trying Anglo-Saxon tools and games.
