The Local Studies Team based in Swindon’s Central Library are a great resource for published material on the history of Swindon and the surrounding areas. A great place to start your research.
Our collection is a great resource for academics and researchers. We also hold images which can be licenced for publication in print or online.
We have a research room which can be used to look through our reference library of art and history books related to our collections along with archaeological reports from excavations in the Borough. Access to the research room must be arranged in advance. A small fee is charged for in-person research which reflects the specialist nature of any assistance provided. Alternatively, our Collections & Exhibitions Team can conduct research on your behalf. We are happy to answer simple questions by email, however more detailed research is charged.
Objects in storage can be viewed by members of the public. This can only be done with prior arrangement with the Collections & Exhibitions Team who will make an assessment of the stability and condition of the items before confirming their availability. A small fee is charged for viewing our objects which reflects the specialist nature of any assistance provided.
We are able to provide high resolution images of objects, specimens, artworks, ephemera and photographs in our collection for publication in print or online. Most of our art collection is still in copyright, and in most cases copyright remains with the artist or their estate. It is the licensee’s responsibility to acquire copyright, although we may be able to provide assistance. There is a charge for the supply of high-resolution images to cover the cost of administration, production and supply. Please email MASCuratorial@swindon.gov.uk for more information.

Based in Chippenham, the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre is the archive for the historic county of Wiltshire, including Swindon. They hold a large amount of important early material and resources for family history research.
